Historic Eckerd
One night during my sophomore year, I was in the Chemistry Computing Lab,
working on a Chemistry paper that was due the next day. Now, this
statement in itself brings several questions to mind: "We have a chemistry
Computing Lab? Where is it?"; "Why were you taking chemistry if you are a
Computer Science Major?"; and "Why were you procrastinating that much?"
are a few that come readily to mind. (The answers are: yes; SHC 205; it
was a mistake; and "PBLLTTTTT!") Anyhow, while looking through a set of
book shelves, I stumbled across 3 ancient volumes labeled "Florida
Presbyterian College, Institutional Self Study." They were dated
1965-66, 1969-70, and 1979-80, (though by 1980, FPC was called Eckerd
College) I began looking through them, and much to my extreme pleasure, I
found aerial photos and campus maps. Even more thrilling was the fact
that the maps included diagrams of planned additions. Ever hear of ETA or
IOTA complexes? They are on these maps as well as 4 additional dining
halls, like one isn't bad enough! It also includes the original
names and purposes of certain buildings. I live in what used to be PASCAL
house. The original shore line is also shown.
I finally found these books again, and scanned in the maps with the hope
that others would find them as fascinating as I did.
Below you will find links to the maps. Each map will eventuaully have
notes at the bottom about items I find of special interest.
FPC: MAY,1965
FPC: Aerial Photo, '65-'66
FPC: Campus Plan Development, September 8,
1969 FPC: Aerial Photo, '69-'70
The cover of the 1980 college self study showed an
aerial photo of the campus.
There was also an interesting photo of the gym's (chapel's?) construction
on the back of the 1967 self study booklet. You can view the photo in color or black and
white for cleaner details.
The front and back covers of the 1965-66 study had artwork pertaining to
the college. The front cover was used as the background for this page,
and the back cover can be viewed by clicking
here. An unobstructed version of the front cover
can be viewed by clicking here.

I am unaware of the copywrite status of any of the images, although I DID
get permission to borrow the books from the lab. None of the views
expressed here in necessarily reflect those of Eckerd College.
